Candle burning!!!!!

Well, it’s been 4 months since surgery! Can you believe it’s been that long? Anyway, things are going well.

I am still working 2 jobs (Home Depot & RIP). At times it can get very exhausting! Especially on Mondays and Wednesdays! Just so you know what I talking about, here is my schedule:

Mon:
Home Depot 4a.m.-8a.m.
RIP 9a.m.-7:45p.m.

Tues:
Home Depot 4a.m.-8a.m.
RIP 9a.m.-3p.m.

Wed:
Home Depot 4a.m.-8a.m.
RIP 9a.m.-7:45p.m.

Thurs:
Home Depot 4a.m.-8a.m.
RIP 9a.m.-3p.m.

Fri:
Home Depot 4a.m.-8a.m.
RIP 9a.m.-2p.m.

So you can see, I am one busy bee! But that’s Okay! You see, I am still off every weekend. This way I can spend time with my family, take care of things around the house, and of course stay active in Church! Gee Whiz Batman, I’ve got the best of both worlds!

As far as weight loss goes, things could not be better! I am down to 230 pounds. That’s a loss of 132 pounds since Feb. ’07, and a loss of 73 pounds since surgery. My BMI has dropped from 46.67 (morbidly obese) to 29.53 (overweight). Wow, I’m just overweight! Watch out world, only 28 more pounds till I become normal! Who would have thunk it? Me, normal!!!! Okay, I know what your thinking, I will never be normal in the sense of the word. But I can be normal as far as weight is concerned!

I know it’s been a while since I posted, but I’m gonna try and do better! I promise, okay I won’t promise, I’ll just do the best I can!

I’ll have new pics up by the end of the week. You see, once again its prom season in Tennessee. Guess who has to get gussied up this Friday? Film at 11:00!

Have a great week!

Old habits die hard....

…and some refuse to die altogether!

Beth and I have been married for 12 years. During that time, we get to house sit for my in-laws when they travel. You see they have 3 dogs, a bird and a partridge in a pear tree. And we all know how hard it is to pack a partridge in a pear tree in a car! Anyway, when RJ was a baby it was a really cool thing. We pretended we were on vacation in Gatlinburg. As the years progressed, it got to be impossible having to carry all his “STUFF” with us. So, we decided on those house sitting days, only one of us would go and the other would stay home.

Now to the old habits refusing to die! This past weekend, right after the Lunch Bunch, Beth headed off for her parents house. We view this now as a mini business trip instead of a vacation! RJ stayed with me for a guy’s night out. Not long after dinner, these habits I speak of decided to rear their ugly head. In the past when Beth was away house sitting, it was a chance for RJ and I to “pig out” so to speak. It was nothing for us to grab a gallon of Blue Bell ice cream, hot fudge sauce and all the other necessities that Satan has surrounded us with, and finish the half gallon in one setting. So what did I do? As soon as dinner was completed, I headed to the “aisle of shame” as RJ calls it. That’s right; I went to that “den of sin” known as the candy and ice cream aisle at K. Rogers

I decided to stay away from ice cream, but hit the sugar free candy hard! I walked away with 3 bags of sugar free candy and one bag of sugar free cookies! When I came home, RJ was on the couch watching TV. He immediately knew what this was, a chance to have a “boys night out”. We picked a good movie and picked our first object of obsession, the Russell Stover Caramel Drops.

Let’s put it this way, we finished the bag within 20 minutes and that was all she wrote. I felt terrible. Mel was not a happy camper! Oh yeah, Mel is the name for my pouch (stomach), as in “Mel’s Diner”. Beth’s’ pouches name is Alice, from the same TV show! Anyway, Mel was not doing well. I never had the gastrointestinal distress that a lot of people have from sweets. This was the first time since surgery that I did have an acid reflux attack. If you have never had one, they are painful. The rest of the candy was disposed of. What was so supposed to be a fun night out for the guys, turned into a disaster of epic proportions!

What did I learn from this episode “Boys can be pigs”? Once again, surgery was done on my stomach, not my head! I feel like I have come a long way in making good food choices. But I also figured out that it’s a long and winding road that leads to a healthier me!

So, what “old habits” are you dealing with? And most importantly, what are you doing about it. For me, it’s “Food for thought and moderation”. In other words, before something goes into my mouth, I will think about it and remember this night! I’m gonna try my best anyway!

Poor choices and stress!

Hey guys!

The last 2 weeks have not been the best since surgery. I feel fine, my body is healing properly, and the energy level is back to normal. In fact, I feel just as I did before surgery, maybe even a little better.

What's the problem you ask? Well, I feel so much like I did before surgery, that I am making some the same bad choices food wise. We are still eating healthy meals, at least a lot healthier than we did before surgery. The problem lies with sugar free treats. I know, I know, I have said the same thing you are thinking..."Sugar free, that's gotta be better...right?" WRONG!!!! At least for me it's wrong. My friend Melinda posted her feelings the other day on sugar free treats and it made a lot of sense! I know what is happening. Sugar free treats have become a comfort food. Before surgery it was ice cream and hot fudge sauce, last night it was Murray’s Sugar Free Shortbread Cookies. I feel better when I eat something like that. The problem lies with the ability to moderate these choices...I have none!

These last 2 weeks there has been a lot of stress in my daily walk. Money seems to be the biggest stress-or. But other things are there too. I should start my part time job this next week, and I'm looking forward to it. The stress comes from the fact that Beth will be with RJ in the mornings. They have a very unique relationship. RJ knows exactly what buttons to push in order to get his way. For me, I don't want Beth to have to deal with that right now. She is working at a job that she loves and does not need that extra stress. But what can I do? I have spoken to RJ, and we have set a plan in place that provides positive reinforcement when RJ is cooperative. All I can do is pray that this works!

So, what can I do for my other situation? You know the comfort food issue. I have an idea of what I can do…the only sugar free treat in my house will be…sugar free jello! I can only tolerate a little of this at one time. So, this way I can have a sweet treat and still work my tool correctly. I think I will also attend the lunch time counseling sessions my Dr.’s office provides. That just might help me get to the bottom of the problem!

By the way, these last 2 weeks, I have not lost any weight, that is another stress-or. I am still at 264 lbs., I only have 2 pounds till I reach that 100 pound lost mark! But on the other hand, I have not gained any either! I realize I am only 7 weeks out, and my body is still trying to hold on to every ounce it can, but this is frustrating to say the least.

Sorry about the long vent. I feel a little better just getting this off my chest! Have a great day, I think mine just got better! Thanks!

Who helps you stay accountable?

Everyday I read several different weight loss blogs. Yesterday on Carbwire, they had a great article and video dealing with buddies or support groups. The main focus was on who is helping you succeed at weight loss?

Now they are not a WLS type of blog, but deal more with weight loss through low carb. I think the catch phrase is a good one, "Livin La Vida Low Carb" lifestyle. The blog itself has some great information on low carb products and recipes!

They discuss the aspect of on line support groups and physical support groups as well. Jimmy looked at the importance of blogging about your journey through a blog or videos. I really enjoyed their video that coincides with the article. I don't agree with all aspects of their discussion, but the focus of support and success was a very important one. So, who in your life is helping you succeed at weight loss? Is it your spouse, a special friend, or just some Jimmy Joe Sue bob you met on the street?

For me that special person is my wife and son! Reason being, she got a head start and is a great example. When I had my surgery, she was there for me. When I hit that roadblock or stall, she was and is there for me. Every time I ask or suggested that we try this or experiment with that, she is there for me! So who helps and supports me...my wife! RJ is a great motivating factor in my life. He supports, defends, and even is ready to help me exercise. I think he might go on to be a Drill Seargent! He's got the voice for it!

Who is that special group...Well duh! It's you guys! With the wealth of knowledge that you have, the compassion, the support. I will put this group on the Tennessee Forum up against anyone in the world. Simply because...YOU ROCK!

SO my question is this? Who helps you stay accountable?

Have a great day!

Can I be any prouder?

When we started this weight loss journey, I knew my wife would be involved. I knew I would be involved. But never in my wildest dreams did I think my son, RJ, would be involved. He has embraced outr lifestyle of healty foods, sugar free desserts and special foods. Occassionally he will ask for a soda, but for the most part he is drinking water. there's not much I can say, so I will let the pictures do the talking for me.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho,It's off to work we go...

Well, today went a lot better than I thought! I took an Achieve One (Thank you Freddie!), a Carb Masters Yogurt, and a cheese stick. From my desk at work I had an Oh Yeah protein bar. And let's not forget 2 bottles of water. So today was fairly decent. Especially since I was only planning on working 2 1/2 hours and ended up staying 6.

The biggest thing today was all the leftover sweets and goodies everyone brought in. Their whole train of thought was "get it out of my house before I eat it all". So what did they do, they brought it to work! Dang their hide! Did I eat any? Did I want any? The answer to both questions is NO!

Thanks for all the prayers and support throughout out the day. It really helped!

Have a great day!

Why is Santa coming early this year?

A good friend of mine from Louisiana once asked me why I am having this surgery. Was it because of personal or medical reasons? You know if I answered that question, it would be a little of both. Personally, I guess it is a little selfish…I would like to be around to watch my son grow! Now I know the next breath I take may be my last! But, I honestly feel this extra weight I am carrying around is definitely hindering my health.

Health wise, I am not in bad shape, but I am not in the best either. It seems I have several co-morbidities that have been known to improve with weight loss. I have the following co-morbidities:

* GERD: Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
* Acute Hypertension
* Osteoarthritis: Caused by aging and additional weight on weight bearing joints
* Sleep Apnea
* Depression

So, the majority of the problems can be corrected with weight loss. Now, I have been able to lose a little weight on my own, and things seem to be better. The main reason I have lost some weight is not drinking soda. We have replaced the 2-3 cases of soda we were drinking, with 2 cases of water. So, if I am losing weight on my on, why am I going through this surgery? I need help! I need help with the ingestion of sweets. I read a great blog yesterday from “Bariatric Brat” that dealt with Gastric Bypass Surgery. Below is part of the article that speaks to my decision:

“Okay, no sugar-coating the truth here (pun intended) - I was a heavy-duty sweet eater before weight loss surgery. That is the primary reason I chose the gastric bypass. I knew that, with my personality, I would search out ways to get my sugar fix whilst defeating the LAP-BAND. I knew that I actually needed the surgery that would make me violently ill if I ingested too much sugar and/or fat. As I have stated before in this space, I love dumping. It keeps me honest. That being said, I have an occasional sweet - and I enjoy it. I can have a few M&Ms and be completely satisfied with the taste and texture, whereas in the old days, I would inhale the 2-pound bag faster than you could say "Jerry Springer" and not even taste it. These days, I can even have a candy dish in my office and it doesn't bother me whatsoever (of course, I keep my pre-op picture near it, but I digress.) I once heard a post-op put it this way: it's not as though you'll never have chocolate cake again. You aren't going to score the corner piece with the double-frosting and sugared roses, but you will have and even enjoy a small piece of, say, your daughter's wedding cake.”

I thought about Lab Band Surgery, but I knew I could cheat. For me I would survive on the Mickey D’s Milkshake Diet. At lunch, I would have a 32oz. milkshake. That would be 1160 calories and 240 carbohydrates. Not to healthy if you ask me!. Compare that to what I will be having…600 calories and 15 carbs per day!

To say I’m excited and scared and at the same time is an understatement! If you have not figured out by now, my surgery has been approved for December 18 of this year. So for Christmas, I will be getting a new lease on life. My request of you, my family and friends, is to say a prayer. And get ready for a new, skinnier me!

Have a great day!

A WLS Timeline!

When I started the WLS process, I knew there would be road blocks. I knew there would be rivers to forge, mountains to climb, and heights to soar! OK, enough with the poetic waxing! I have been trying to put together a time line from when I made up my mind to now. I realize that this might not be totally accurate, but it is very close what is happening. So, with out further ado:

4/20/07 Weight loss consultation with PCP
4/21/07 WLS Seminar at Centennial
5/21/07 2nd month of 6 month diet
6/22/07 3rd month of 6 month diet
7/24/07 4th month of 6 month diet
8/21/07 5th month of 6 month diet
9/17/07 6th month of 6 month diet

At this point, I thought all my paperwork would be turned in. Unfortunately no, and if I had not followed up with insurance, I never would have known. At this point I found out that my Nutrition appointment and Surgical Consult needed to be scheduled. Now back to the regularly scheduled program:

9/24/07 Scheduled Nut appointment and surgical consult
10/3/07 Nutrition appointment
10/8/07 Surgical appointment
10/9/07 Upper GI Scheduled
10/17/07 Checked to see if my paperwork to insurance has been turned in. My insurance rep at the Dr.’s office told me I was missing my 6th month weight consultation. After an evening of anger, the situation took care of itself.
10/18/07 Weight loss packet faxed to Cigna
10/22/07 Weight loss packer returned unreadable
10/23/07 Weight loss packet mailed to CIGNA
10/26/07 Information entered into CIGNA computer. Calling daily to check on progress.
11/2/07 CIGNA reports that packet is in out-patient approval dept. After numerous calls to Dr's Office, situation seems to be corrected. Once again the waiting game has started once again!

11/4/07 Created time line

Where are we? That seems to be the Million Dollar question. Once again I will start calling on Monday to check on progress!

he great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes ~

Have a great week!

Live Like You were Dying?

Music speaks to people in many different ways. You've heard the saying, "Music soothes the savage beast". Music makes us sad or happy,. Music can lift our spirits, or have us crying in our beer.

Well, several months ago, when I started this journey I am on, I posted the words to a song. The song was from the movie Dreamgirls. It was one that was sung by Jennifer Hudson called "I Am Changing". The words of this song spoke loudly to me! Yes, I am changing! Changing the way I eat, changing the way I do things in my life, changing for my family. I believe these changes are for the better. Whether to make me a better person, or allow me to do things I have never done before. changes are happening!

Well, day before yesterday, I heard one of my favorite songs on the radio. Tim McGraw's Live Like You were Dying. And yes, before you commit assumicide...the words spoke to me!

Before I started making changes,in my life, I was living like I was dying! Matter of fact, I probably was dying. My weight was killing me! I was tired, breathing was a problem, walking was the worse. My life consisted of working and eating, watching TV and sleeping. Going to the basement was tortuous, climbing stairs was a nightmare. I think you get the picture.

The words from this song really mean a lot to me! Not only the sentiment involved, but the mere thought of taking advantage of every waking minute. Yes, I still love my TV! But walking means a lot also. In fact last week at the Walk From Obesity, I walked 4 miles! Being able to do things like hiking, climbing stairs, watching my son play football means so much!

You know, we are not promised anything in life. We are not promised tomorrow, a week from now, or even our next breath! So my challenge to my friends and family this week is simple...Live like you were dying!

For those who have not seen or heard the video, I have placed it here, along with the lyrics, for your convenience. Listen and enjoy! Oh yeah, Have a great week!

He said I was in my early forties
With a lot of life before me
When a moment came that stopped me on a dime
And I spent most of the next days
Looking at the x-rays
Talking bout the options
And talking bout sweet time
I asked him when it sank in
That this might really be the real end
How’s it hit you when you get that kind of news?
Man what’d you do?

And he said
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu-Manchu
And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I’d been denying
And he said someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying.

He said I was finally the husband
That most the time I wasn’t
And I became a friend a friend would like to have
And all the sudden going fishing
Wasn’t such an imposition
And I went three times that year I lost my dad
Well I finally read the good book
And I took a good long hard look
At what I’d do if I could do it all again

And then
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu-Manchu
And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I’d been denying
And he said someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying.

Like tomorrow was a gift and you got eternity to think about
What’d you do with it
What did you do with it?
What did I do with it?
What would I do with it?

Sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu-Manchu
And then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
And I watched an eagle as it was flying
And he said someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying.
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying

A whole new us!

Things haven't gone to well in the last couple of weeks. short on money, heat wave, air conditioner broke, etc... Guess what? I think it's all how you look at it! You can choose to have a bad day, or you can choose to have a good day! Once again it comes down to choices, just like it did with R.J. on Saturday (What a Day !) So here it is..."I'm gonna have a good day! There I said it, so that means it should work...right?

It's more than just saying it, it's doing it. As I sit here contemplating what the day will bring, I also look at what it's brought in the past. I have a great wife who is doing things to for herself. She is loosing weight so she can be a healthier person. She leaves for work every morning at 6:00 and because of football practice, does not get home till after 8:00 on most nights. On the weekend, she cooks healthy foods so we can "scoop & nuke" when we get home. I have a wonderful son! He is doing great in school! I was worried, he transfered to a public school this year. I should have known he would thrive in that surrounding. He is doing great at football! Hopefully he will be my wife and I's retirement plan! LOL !!!

You know what, I am Blessed with a capital B! I have nothing to complain about, it could always be worse! Making choices, I think that's what God had in mind when he gave us free will! So I am going to make the choice, here it goes, wait on it...I AM GOING TO HAVE A GOOD DAY, NO MATTER WHAT IS THROWN MY WAY!

Just for giggles, I thought I would throw in a picture of the progress Beth and I have made since Feb.

Just kidding! But my wife has made tremendous progress. since the first picture was taken, she has lost almost 100 lbs. The first picture was taken at Ripley's Believe I Or Not in Gatlinburg on our honeymoon! I love you honey! Oh Me !

Making Anthills Into Mountains,,,

I think I have reached somewhat of a stall. Guess what, it's my fault! I just finished my psychiatric evaluation, and only have 1 more visit to my Doc for the 6 month weight management program. For the last month I have been sabotaging myself with my eating habits. I have lost a total of 56.8 pounds, now I know this is good, but as I get closer to the insurance finish line, I 'm getting scared. Maybe I can do this, maybe I can't, I don't know. People keep telling me I don't need this surgery, I've lost this much weight by myself. So...the self doubt issues surface. I know I am rambling, so please excuse me for this!

I just have one request...as we keep praying for our brother Bob, keep guys like me (I know there are other's out there!) in your prayers also!

Have a great week!

I Am Changing...

I watched the movie Dreamgirls the other night and was blown away with Jennifer Hudson's performance. It was amazing. But there was one song that really stood out, "I Am changing". This was a song about someone on their last chance at making it. She was coming off months of unemployment and alcoholism. When she sang this song, I could not help but think of the decisions we make everyday, but especially the decision to have WLS. That’s right, I am changing, and I need a hand, I need support, I need help! And the support of my family and freinds is where I am finding it daily. So to all my WLS brothers and sisters, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I Am Changing !

I Am Changing
Artist: Dreamgirls
SoundtrackAlbum: Dreamgirls Soundtrack

I Am Changing
Look at me, Look at me
I am changing
Trying every way I can
I am changing
I'll be better than I am
I'm trying to find a way to understand
But I need you, I need you
I need a hand
I am changing
Seeing everything so clear
I am changing
I'm gonna start right now, right here
I'm hoping to work it out
And I know that I can
But I need you, I need a hand

All of my life I've been a fool
Who said I can do it on my own
How many good friends have I already lost?
How many dog nights have I known?
Walking down that wrong road
There was nothing I could find
All those years of darkness
Looking for some light
But now I can see

I am changing
Trying every way I can
I am changing
I'll be better than I am
But I need a friend
To help me start all over again
That would be just fine
I know it's gonna work out this time'
Cause this time I am
This time I am
I am changing
I'll get my life together now
I am changing
Yes I know how
I'm gonna start again
I'm gonna leave my past behind
I'll change my life
I'll make a vow and nothings gonna stop me now
